leaf roll remedy?

I'm noticing the oldest, lower leaves of my cab franc vines are showing a bit of reddening--like premature fall coloring. And the leaves are beginning to--ever so slightly--curl under. I believe this is leaf roll virus. I thought it might be a potassium deficiency, but there is no symptom on newer leaves or the upper canopy.

Is there a rememedy for leaf roll virus? Can it be controlled this year? What preventative maintenance will stop it from coming back next year? Is it fatal to vines? (i've been told no, but need to confirm it)

Jeff, I would say that your first impression is correct. Take a look at this page.

BTW, If it is potassium deficiency I have had GREAT success by mulching to get rid of the problem. Also water the hell out of the vine before you mulch. If your soil is dry that will cause it. I've found that water takes care of ALOT of problems that I used to try to fix by adding fertilizer.

Bob:

Thanks a bunch for the link. Since my first post I've been doing more research, and am more convinced that my problem is potassium deficiency. After looking at the photos in your link I am relieved. It's a solvable problem. Leaf roll--though not fatal--is pretty well incurable, from what I've read. My potassium deficiency is explainable in my case, since the vines in my vineyard are all potted. They've been getting enough water, and I've been fertilizing with a half strength solution of 15-30-15 Miracle-gro, but for fear of over fertilizing (and burning the roots), have been holding back. The potassium deficiency is the more logical explanation in my case. Other research and the images you referred me to confirm it. Unless other evidence convinces me it's not -K, I'm going to treat it as such.
