Little hint

A way back, someone asked about primary vessles. Jack had written that his wife made some neat little elastic banded muslin "caps" for his primaries. I had my girlfriend do the same for me, and the little "chef hats" are excellent.

We decided to take this a step further and make little cloaks for my secondaries. I need something like this because my basement is too cold to complete fermentation in the winter, and the kitchen collects the carboys, so there is too much light around for a truly dark wine. I haven't dyed these dark color yet, but will very soon.

Here is an example that I have on a batch of blueberry that is still pushing the airlock every couple seconds.

In the background there are several batches of Welch's products going that I really don't care about the color much...

I've always used black trash bags to cover my carboys (4 ltr up to

6.5-gal) -- just cut a small hole in the bottom of the bag. Your solution looks a lot better, but my wife "doesn't do sewing."

Hi Greg, Nice idea. You do know you Walkers in Fredonia and Presque Isle sell juice, right? Walker's is in Fredonia if you are willing to drive 30 miles, they have a website.

Joe,

Never made it to Walkers. I just stopped by Presque Isle and bought a couple of supplies today.

I didn't get any juice last year, timing for me wasn't quite right. This year I plan on a couple of batches!

Are you in this area too? I hit the North East Wine Fest now that I live here.
