meaning of the term "racking"?

Mar 01, 2011 2 Replies

This just came up in alt.usage.english and I want to check my work.

AIUI, the term "racking" means transferring liquid from one container (or set) to another container (or set), so it includes both intermediate racking stages for sediment removal and clarity *and* bottling (racking into bottles).

Right or wrong?

Thanks.

OTOH, the OED defines "rack" only as the first thing I mentioned: "To draw off (wine, cider, etc.) from the sediment. Also with 'off'."
