priming sugar for 1 gallon

I have made one gallon batches of cider and wine and have added 1 1/2 tablespoons of sugar at bottling time to make them sparkling. I just read a book that recommends adding 1/4 cup of sugar per gallon. The book also talked about exploding bottles. I was wondering how much sugar can I safely add to one gallon to make it carbonated?

Lum recommends 1 1/2 oz. sugar per gallon. Using liquid measures, 1

1/2 oz equals 3 tbsp. I think Lum is measuring by weight (not volume), but a quick measurement with a small scale indicates that 3 tbsp should be pretty close to 1 1/2 oz of standard granulated sugar.

I made a sparkling cider simply by using ~25 mL of apple juice concentrate at bottling... I bottled in grolsch bottles. It was quite similar to a brut champagne, except there was still a hint of apple flavour in the profile. Anyway, I would treat cider more like beer for an authentic product. If you search the rec.crafts.brewing archives at google there is some information there about priming cider. As for the wine, follow Lum's recommendations.
