Which is it please?

Neither. It's "Quality drink makes you feel nice. Drink cheap crap and pay the price."

It's: Wein auf Bier das rat ich dir; Bier auf Wein? Lass das sein!

Though there is some question whether the "Wein" doesn't actually refer to rieslings and the like, but instead refers to "Weinbrand", which is brandy, or other distillate.

Beyond that, the whole issue is highly disputed and has no basis in anything objective :0)

Why would it be in German? I say it's in Dutch: "Wijn na bier, plezier; Bier an wijn, venijn."

you will be in worse shape if you drink the drink with less alchohol first. so if you drink wine (higher alchohol) first, then beer (most likely less alchohol), you should be ok. everyone is different though. some people cant drink red white, dark beer, etc, so certain things mess them up easy.

I became familiar with the saying because it's illustrated in a painting on the wall of the Ratherskellar in the student union on the campus of the University of Wisconsin (along with several other sayings & pictures in German). If nothing else if gave my German language class teachers an excuse to have the the occasional gathering for a beer or two while getting a lesson in German culture. ;-)

Don't mix your drinks. So whoever came up with that German thing Blue (Frankenheimer?) which is a mix of Altbier and Coca Cola should be shot. As for wine and beer there is a saying "Never mix the grain and the grape" which was fine till someone invented muesli.
