My friend has a white film on his chardonnay in a 2.8 L carboy. Haven't seen it so I do not know if it looks like mother or not. He says its very white. A little history: Fresh grapes The other 7.5 gal from the same batch is on oak. No noticeable film in the barrel. No sulfite added yet. Natural yeast. No off-odor present. Cannot comment on thickness or ease of breaking it up.

Sorry that should be 2.8 gal not 2.8 L carboy
He has 2.8 gallons of Chardonnay that is well on its way to spoiling, if it isn't already lost. My guess is that the carboy has a fair amount of headspace above the wine.
If the wine in his barrel is still OK, he should NOT use the carboy for topping the barrel. He should sulfite the wine in the barrel and keep it topped up with known, good wine until bottling time.
