North Devon pub recommendations

Can anyone recommend any good pubs in north Devon, roughly between Barnstaple and Tiverton?

And while you're at it, any between Barnstaple and Ilfracombe?

What's wrong with the ones in the GBG? Don't think I've been to any bad places in Devon - great county for pubs.

Probably not much if you can accept the fact that it's out of date before it goes to print. I was after some local advice from people who use pubs in that area on a regular basis.

LOL!

Well, they'ld have to be speaking to you by telephone direct from the bar during opening hours, and preferably through a mouthful of beaded bubbles winking at the brim of a fresh pint. Otherwise their advice would be out of date too. :-)

They don't have to phone me - posting here via a mobile device would be fine!

GBG coverage is a bit sparse, even though the book's twice as thick now as it was twenty years ago.

Between Barnstaple and Ilfracombe it recommends two pubs: one I always visit for lunch and a cliff walk, one good locals' pub that isn't convenient for my tourist needs.

CAMRA branches are allowed a certain number of GBG entries, which these days is less than the number of satisfactory real ale pubs in the area, so there are normally good pubs that aren't in the guide. Those are the ones we'd like to hear about.

All I'm getting are server time out errors and 404 errors.

Doesn't mention real ale.

The newsletters worked earlier - try later - there's a fault I think or probably the webmaster has had a good lunch. There are tel numbers for branch execs - but only on Camra business.

It does have: North Devon CAMRA Pub Of The Year 2007 The Bell Inn, Chittlehampton.

Er, lots do: ie this one:

Black Horse Inn - Braunton A traditional Public House, well known for its real ales served straight from the cask.

looks good.

This is in the GBG

Marshalls Town centre pub, close to historic Butchers Row. Renowned for its good real ales being in CAMRA Good Beer Guide for four years.

Tell you what - I'll go instead of you...

Now this is something we have seen only down in the west country -- ale drawn thru a spigot driven into the head of the cask, which is sitting horizontally on a ledge behind the bar. We are 'muricans, but we do come over often to drive round the UK stopping at pubs. Why izzit that in the west country so much beer is served from casks up in the bar while everywhere else it comes from the cellar via handpumps???

There are plenty of pubs elsewhere that do this. It may be that Devon has more basic premises with no cellar. I spent many happy hours in the Drewe Arms, Drewsteignton in north Dartmoor, on holidays, often serving myself from the barrel along with Mrs Mudge (whose hands were a bit shaky), for a long time the oldest landlady in the UK.
