Opinion of Glenlivet?

Glenlivet 12 YO is showing up in the stores at slightly more than $20 these days. Not a bad price for a single-malt Scotch.

What do you think of Glenlivet 12 YO?

It was what people I knew drank for single malts before they knew anything about single malts. I haven't bought any in many years but I recall it being inoffensive, unexciting, better than most mass-market blends and infinitely preferable to a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. Some people see it as an entry-level malt. I'd drink it if I didn't have alternatives.

If you're not familiar with it, I recommend you buy a bottle. There's no downside. It won't injure you, it won't put a great dent in your wallet, it will broaden your single malt experience, and if you decide you don't want to finish the bottle, you can always serve it to Uncle Larry and other visitors on whom the Ardbeg and the Lagavulin would be utterly wasted.

cheers.

A clearly underrated malt

I think it matures much better than most of its neighbours. The whisky is light and floral and unlike some other Speysides there's no sign of unmaturey in the 12y. The 15y has always been one of my favourites. The 18y is also good, but not really and improvement to the 15y (also more expensive)

Often considered a beginners whisky because "it doesnt hurt anybody". Theres no peat. Theres no Sherry. The alcohol percentage is low. But I also consider it an advanced whisky. Thats mostly due to my own experiences. It took me several years of hard training :-) to be able to taste and discover how Glenlivet really was. And I might still have to drink it 3 or 4 days in a row to get it today

Buy. It is not one to rape your taste buds. It is smooth, delicate, restrained, balanced and simply good. But, there are indeed better ones out there, at a price, of course. Anders

In my view one of the best Speysides, that will hold its own against almost any other whisky. I know there are many here who prefer their tastes buds to be titillated with plenty of peat, but for those who prefer more subtle flavours occasionally then The Glenlivet is excellent. Much much better than a mere "entry-level whisky"

The Glenlivet used to be the biggest seller in the US, might still be.

The distillery bottled 18yo is little short of nectar, and Gordon and MacPhail do a variety of bottlings of Glenlivet of varying ages under George & JG Smith's Glenlivet Whisky label.

And the Scots Malt Whisky Society did a few superb examples over recent years.

Eulogy over

I love it, think it's a classic and think every whisky lover should try it. However, as much as I like the 18 too, I think the 15 is better and the 21 better still - but at a sensible price the 12 is pretty nectarish for me.

Well, I purchased the bottle of Glenlivet 12 YO, and I am going to try a dram later.

I have had it at bars at various times but don't really remember much about how it tastes. Those were when I asked for Scotch on the rocks, before I have learned to appreciate Scotch beyond its value as a refreshing drink. But this will be the first neat dram of Glenlivet.

Arbeg is by far my favorite but I do not want to spend $45 every time!

I don't like the 12yo, but it's a good price.

For me, the only Glenlivet that I really like is the 21yo, Glenlivet Archive. I've got a bottle at home that will be opened on Thursday!

mmmmm.

I have enjoyed the drams of Glenlivet a lot!

Thanks for the input from all of you. I am actually quite surprised about how good I found a dram of Glenlivet, given my usual preference for Ardbeg. Now, I think I will probably drink Glenlivet more often than Ardbeg because of the excellent price.

Agreed - bought a bottle for my wife and have a hard time not stealing drinks from it... A fine bottle indeed.

And mine's now half gone! I had to share it with two other people who like scotch.

Fortunately, I have another unopened bottle in the cupboard.
