belgian beers

I was thinking of stopping at BevMo tomorrow and picking up a few different belgian beers to try. I never had any before but hear they are among the best in the world.

Any recommendations?

thx.

Never had any Belgian beers before? I would go with Duvel, Dupont Saison, and maybe Chimay Grand Reserve (Blue label).

Thanks Randal, I took your recommendation and picked up the Duvel and the Chimay, didn't see any Dupont. I also picked up Trappist Rochefort #10 and Orval trappist ... saw them listed in wikipedia i think. I will probably try the Chimay later tonight. thx Ralph

hmmm, didn't see that one there. They only had about 15 different belgian beers/ales on the shelf.

Interesting hobby. How do you get the labels off easily without tearing them? hot water?

Do you have any favorites that you re-visit, or do you prefer to just see how many different beers you can try?

notbob, 10.99 USD today at BevMo in Mountain View California US. I don't know the past prices. Just wanted to try some good belgian ales. At that price it's a luxury for me, not something i will buy often, if ever again.

Out of curiousity, when was the last time you looked?

Split the Chimay Ale with my brother tonight. Here is my review, but I'm a rank amateur of course lol.

I was pretty impressed, after the foam died down that is. It was very foamy. I think I was expecting a thick bitter ale like guinness when I saw it, but this is somewhat sweet almost like fruit. Still drinking it btw. It's definitely not like the beers I'm used to. My brother enjoyed it too. oh well, thx for the rec.

Covering the label with a wet cloth and leaving it overnight usually works.

Try Ommegang, IMO it's just as good as the Chimay and a lot cheaper.

Hello Ralph, Most of the labels are easy to get off bij using hot water, just a few minuts. Otherwise i leave the bottle a night in cold water. If that doesnt succeed I try the microwave oven (not with foiled labels because that gives a fireworks effect)

If that doesnt succeed I take a picture

The american bottles are very often hard to get off. When the bottle is cold and there is condense on the bottle sometimes I get them of while drinking

I doent often retry any beer. My favourite beer style is Belgian Dubbel (Double) Belgian is a three hours drive so once in a while I can get me some great beers. In the Netherlands there are a lot off common belgian beers available Im working on my new update. In a few months I tasted 6000 beers!!

So you just buy them for the labels?

hey Ralph. try all the deferent beer you can and you make up your mind what is best . As far as getting the lables off in one piece fill a container with water and TSP (tri soudium phosfate) found in any hardware store. Let soak over night . they should slide right off

Hi George, I Have been trying quite a few new beers lately. I found that I really like the Rocheforte 10's and the Chimay blue in the belgians. The Ayinger Celebrators are another fav. They are easy to get too. And I just picked up some stouts (Alesmith and Samuel Smiths) for the weekend to try. I'll work it all off on sunday!

As for the labels, plain water works just fine. I got bored taking them off after a half dozen or so though. They make great bookmarks but it's hard to read after a few Celebrators :-).
