Barrow-in-Furness

Hello all

I was wondering if anyone could recommend a pub in Barrow. Will have to go there on Friday.

Ambrose Hotel, Duke St. Alternatively Wetherspoon's Furness Railway on Abbey Rd - that's if you can get through the doors. Absolutely packed of a weekend.

Can you get any Abraham Thompson beer there?

Ulverston about 8 miles away (bus'll take you) provides a much more pleasant drinking experience than Barrow - the beer is better (i.e there is actually a degree of choice), the pubs are nicer and the miasma of alcopop-fuelled violence doesn't hang in the air.

Failing that, yes the Ambrose gets highly spoken of these days (haven't tried it myself). Personally I can't understand anyone drinking in a Wetherspoons so I'd say avoid the Furness Railway (a pub which I have visited several times when with others and never ever had a pint of anything that wasn't 'off' in one way or another).

It also used to have a brewery. Hartleys IIRC...

I don't think that the Cumberland Way goes through Stockport ;-)

Thanks all. If the train times are OK I might go to Ulverston instead. Don't really fancy a "miasma of violence" :)

No, but Stockport-brewed Hartleys beers will be far better than the keg filth that is usual in Barrow...

Dare I suggest that for many years Hartleys brewed in a very variable manner on clapped-out plant, and the Stockport-brewed beers, while not the same, have in fact been better and far more consistent?

Sorry, I should have said "fetid miasma of violence". You're making the right choice going to Ulverston believe me!

Hi

I am surprised nobody has suggested the "Prince of Wales", Foxfield.

Decent beer, quiet pub, no violence (they don't sell lager), reasonable transport from Barrow and it IS ALSO a brewery (Foxfield brewery) - plus Broughton is only a ten minute walk away with even more real ale!!!

LOL! I might have been able to stand an odourless miasma of violence but not if it smells :)

Doesn't it have odd opening times at this time of year?

Not at the moment. However, I have it on good authority that the Black Dog, Dalton, has the latest offering on the bar as we speak, a 4.2% Porter ;-)

Well eventually I ended up in the Robin Hood, just off Cavendish St. A really nice old traditional locals' boozer, with the racing on the TV, betting slips on the bar, and people going to and forth from the bookies. There was Robinsons Cumbrian Way and Old Stockport on.

What a wind though. I don't feel the cold normally but it was pretty chilly. Everyone looked really pale and windswept.

That'll be the beer in the Robin Hood.

West Riding Licensed Refreshment Rooms in Dewsbury - and in Huddersfield there are two pubs sharing the honours, as there are in Leeds.
