cain's, zerodegrees, freedom, meantime, cotswold, & taddington (nr buxton, brewers of 'moravka') & prob a few others are all small - medium sized breweries (zerodegrees is a small chain of brewpubs) & all seem to be at least trying to have a stab at brewing decent (flavourful) British lager, but I'm not sure what your question was - did you mean "do any big British brewers' lagers have flavour?" in which case my answer would be "in my experience, do they have any good flavour . . . no." cheers MikeMcG

Breaking the "avoid stuff brewed under license" rule, Kaltenberg brewed by Thwaites is excellent. I drink it preference to Thwaites ales quite often.

yes, I've heard good things about it too (not tried it tho) - won a couple of awards, I think.

I forgot about another regional doing some good lager - I've never tried their Alpine (I think formerly Ayingerbrau, brewed under licence), but Sam Smith's bottled Pure Brewed & Organic lagers are both v nice. cheers MikeMcG

Whew! I have been so inundated with blonde ales in the UK of late .. just thought the whole place was turned topsy turvy. Lemme guess --- does Dark Star actually brew a (bumpa dump) DARK STAR???

Or just the dumb blondes???

although, somewhat confusingly, Pitfield 'Originally' brewed 'Dark Star' (& indeed IIRC won CBoB with it in the 1980s?) MikeMcG

And after a while the brewery was renamed Dark Star and the beer Original.

(when I said "confusingly", I meant to those who don't know the story :~)

interestingly Pitfield's website says "'Dark Star' was introduced in

1985 and in 1987 won the title of 'Best New Beer' and came runner up in 'The Champion Beer of Britain.' The following year (1988) it was awarded 'The Supreme Champion Beer of Britain.' It has now been renamed 'Black Eagle'." from

I still think Holts should have retained the name of "Holts Regal Lager" I know sometimes things get done backwards but that seemed too good to lose.
