Cask lager

Hi all, for my pains I'm organising the Melton Mowbray beer festival (its not until September so there's no rush). This year we're going to try and have a (cask) lager bar to try and convert the horde that come to see the band and don't care what the hell they drink. What I need to know is who out there brews cask lager. so far I know Harvistoun Cains Oldershaws (lager malt at least) Tunnel west Dorset

there must be others out there, let me know

Hi there-I see Gary Oldershaw's Regal Blonde is on your list-a local pub always had 5 firkins of this available at its beer festivals for the same reason and it always went. Also see if you can ask Sara from Brewsters if she will be brewing Fraubrau this summer-it's a good 5.2% ABV lager. Looking forward to helping out at Melton again this year :)

we're planning on properly brewing a decent lager & putting some in cask, hopefully well before September(!), so feel free to drop us an email or a bell nearer the time? Cheers MikeMcG

oh & a couple of others - I don't know how authentic they are (lager yeast, cold ferment, cold matured, etc) Oakleaf "I Can't Believe It's Not Bitter" Wylam "Northumberland Cask Lager"

Hawkshead do a bottled "Lakeland Lager" which I think has occasionally been on cask.

Cain's launched a cask version of their Bock at Liverpool fest last year - 8%abv! (they're keeping it that strength in the bottle but the cask version will be 4.5% - not exactly bock strength :~(

(& searching for "lager" in the beer search engine) there's 170 UK & Irish beers (dead or alive) that call themselves lager & another 41 that call themselves pils/ pilsner, etc!

Good luck! cheers MikeMcG

there's apparently 170

Bock beers should be at least 6.5% to quallify to be called BOCK!

Anyone know which if the beers in this thread are brewed fairly authentically? (i'd guess few ale brewing micros would want to spend weeks/months cold-maturing beer, or have the risk of 2 yeast strains in the brewery). Though a rarity in cask, I know Zerodegrees lager are pretty 'kosher' & by the sounds of it so are Harviestoun, Cain's, Taddington (available in cask?) & Felstar. cheers MikeMcG

According to their website Iceni norfolk lager for 13 weeks at 2 degrees celsius. Which sounds a pretty reasonable amount of time.

Cotswold brewing do their own lagers, not sure if they do them cask as standard, but I'm sure they'd be negotiable on it if not.

not.http://www.cotswoldbrewingcompany.com/lager.html

good beer, esp the stronger 5%er - I didn't spot any casks while at the brewery a few months ago, but worth an ask. ZeroDegs do occasional cask versions mainly for fests/competitions I think cheers MikeMcG
