Burtonwood beers

My local Burtonwood pub (White Lion, Barthomley, S Cheshire) is one of the few around here where you can absolutely guarantee a first-class pint every time. Admittedly I always drink the Top Hat rather than the bitter (or one of the guest ales, also kept perfectly). I shall be less than impressed if Pedigree appears as a regular fixture, as this is one of the many once-excellent beers (e.g.Wadworth 6X, Greene King Abbot, Young's Special)that tastes nothing like they used to years ago and is now just as bland as most other nationally available bitters. Top Hat, on the other hand, still tastes as it did when I first drank it at the White Lion 20 years ago (although I can't vouch for it elsewhere)...

I think we'll have to agree to differ here. I always find Top Hat a very nondescript beer, drinking below its strength, whereas Pedgree is a very drinkable beer these days - it seems to have improved somewhat recently, and certainly still has that powerful sulphurous tang. I certainly wouldn't describe it as bland, though it's not to everyone's taste. I've spent some time in a Brewer's Fayre 'pub' during the last few months (don't ask) and the Pedigree tasted consistently better than the Bass (nothing else available of course).

That said, I'd also be sorry to see the Burtonwood beers disappear.

Best regards, Paul

20 Years ago Top Hat ???

I would guess it was first around in the early nineties? 1992 ? 12 years ago?

I think David, you've had too many pints of Top Hat!

Don't complain. I should be so lucky as to have such an excellent local.

As for Top Hat, here's a quote from their web site (groan!):

Top Hat drinkers like its style and unique ry hop character.
