yeah, never mind the 1000 employees - just get to the front of the queue for the pints, pies & butties ! ;~) I went a year or 2 back & the (council employed?) "blue guide" who took the tour knew a lot about the history (Robert Cain, Dr Duncan, etc) some of which I've not heard before (some of which I'm not convinced about . . . but on the beer & brewing side he was just hopeless.

Showing us a plastic jar of 10-year old hop pellets he explained breweries no longer use whole hops as they don't keep well (I quietly explained that 99% of micros & many bigger breweries still use whole hops & they're now fresher than ever, as they're vacuum-packed in small quantities).

There were several similarly misguided moments, but £3.75 for 2 pints & a pretty good buffet was top value (it's since gone up, a lot, but still prob OK price)

Whilst typing this I am drinking Staropramen.....but I am drinking it from a Cains glass. Cains is the major brand round here [like you, I am Wirral-based] and I would be very sad to see it go under.

Anyway, I got my date wrong; I'm doing the tour in about 3 weeks time!

I shall listen carefully!

Hi Judith - apologies I hadn't realised we'd met elsewhere online :~)

aye, it would be sad indeed if they went under - Liverpool's only sizeable brewer, now a major regional employer (as they now own 100+ pubs); hard-working, risk-taking owners who've invested their all in the place; lovely brewery buildings, + a few good pubs & some good beers (esp the mild - Ricky Tomlinson's favourite & IMO sublime when fresh), etc, etc.

take notes - that'll really put the wind up them ;~)

Thanks for the reminder. I did sort of know about it but had forgotten, if you see what I mean.

Unfortunately I definitely can't go on the Sunday and may not be able to go on the Monday either but I'll try to. I spent a very enjoyable day there two years ago. Cheese, beer, ice-cream .....what more could anyone want?

are you people real? worried about missing a brewery trip! reminiscing about what happened when you went. Look at the bigger poicture here the really serious business we are in danger of losing yet another brewery here!!!

yes I'm real, I've been following the story closely - I'm pretty local & I've spoken several times to some of the staff this week & expressed my sympathy for their situation & my hope that it's resolved successfully - what else would you like me to do?

What are you doing? (apart from berating people for having a conversation here).

I have every sympathy for the hardworking, ambitious people behind Cain's & their staff. I really hope the iconic brewery, pubs, beers, etc all remain intact. I hinted as much when I playfully criticised Judith above, she however also said "I would be very sad to see it go under" & my reply included a paragraph beginning "it would be sad indeed if they went under" & went on to say why.

All you said was that you'd miss one of the beers if they closed.

LIVERPOOL brewer Cains was locked in talks with its bank’s consultants today to thrash out a rescue plan.

The Stanhope Street brewery’s hopes of agreeing a new business plan and funding to trade through the current difficult conditions were dashed on Friday when the Bank of Scotland refused to accept their proposals.

Cains Beer Company co-owners Ajmail and Sudarghara Dusanj consulted with their advisors over the weekend.

Today chief executive Sudarghara revealed: “We and our advisers are continuing to work with and alongside the bank’s consultants to formulate a plan which will be acceptable to the bank.
