Cider Houses????

Just got my February What's Brewing (10th of the month is usually when I get it over here). I was reading the article reviewing the book on Bath pubs and noticed a mention about the Beehive being Bath's last Cider House and that sadly it closed in 2001. In 1995 during our first visit to England my wife and I took a day trip to Bath on the train from London. We visited the Roman Baths in the morning, had a pub lunch in one of the pubs nearby and then set out to explore this very hilly city. After a strenuous walk around admiring the Georgian architecture we started to head back towards the train station when we stumbled upon the Beehive. Being a real ale novice at that time (no GBG to assist me) pub visiting was hit or miss. What attracted us to the Beehive was a sign outside offering 70p pints of some tasteless sh*t. As I was consuming my pint of cheap swill I noticed that most of the patrons were not drinking what I was drinking. In the dimly lit pub it looked to me as if they were having pints of orange soda pop. Obviously I knew these grown men (my wife was the only female in the place) were not drinking Fanta so I asked the bartender what they were having. He told me and we switced to the cider on the next round. We had a great time there chatting with locals and left feeling pretty good to head back to the train station. I always hoped I could return there someday for another fun afternoon, but that is now not to be. At least I have my fond memories.

My question is that are there still cider houses in England? I have visited many pubs in England and Wales during my annual visits to the UK and have never encountered another pub like the Beehive where most of the patrons were consuming cider.

There is at least one left, in Newton Abbot, Devon. When I was there last year it sold only draught scrumpy style Cider, and Perry. There may have been some bottles of other stuff in the fridge! The Cider Bar

You need to pop along to the CAMRA web site and check the availability of the good cider guide. Not all places will be all but exclusively cider drinking fraternity but the availability is at least known.

Thinking about it there was a CAMRA products list in the packaging with the last WB wasn't there?

Not OT to discuss *real* cider.

Apart from the one in Newton Abbot that Neil mentioned in his earlier reply here, ('Ye Olde Cider Bar'), here are some more ... I don't know if they are still open or even if the info is 'up-to-date' ... I'll apologise now if it isn't ?

'Cider House', Wootton Green, Quatt, near Bridgnorth (01746) 780285

'Cider Centre', Brandy Wharf, Waddingham, Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, DN21 4RU (01652) 678364

'Cider House' (or 'Monkey House') Defford, Woodmancote, Worcestershire (01386) 750234

'Coronation Tap'

8 Sion Place Clifton Bristol BS8 4AX (0117) 973 9617

I seem to recall there's one in Hay-on-Wye itself, but I can never remember the name ???

Plus ... there's one starting up in Wales !!!

"Wales has it's first true ciderhouse (a pub that sells cider, but no beer). It's opening in the Spring of 2004, at Ralph's Cider, Old Badlands Farm, New Radnor, Powys."

"The 'Ciderhouse' will be open for both on and off-sales of Ralph's cider and perry."

(Tel : 'Ralph's Cider' on 01544 350304)

Hope this is of some use to you Bruce ?

I have too and I must say it is great, though quite possibly one of the most surreal places I've ever been to.

They have a whale sticking through the ceiling if I remember correctly. A real "characterful" pub

And also, about the only food they sell is fifty varieties of sausages, with mash. But what sausages - oh what sausages! - and what cider - yum yum yum

It's in a really surreal place too, next to this culverted river, and as for the toilets... "basic" isn't the word

Happened to end up there last w/end !

Not really a "Cider House" as it sells RA and other drinks as well, really a good local pub. Very crowded but friendly. Very dark inside...only noticed the Cider towards the end of the session, at least five "from the wood" from casks stacked up behind the bar.
