Hisampling a few post here and there, I understand that some CourageRussian Imperial Stout was available at GBBF... is it true?I knew the beer was dead and last brewed in 1993 (I still have a smallbottle :-)).If it was actually Courage IRS... (damn... one of my fav beers ever...and I was just about to go to GBBF, but decided too late and air fareswere rocket high) was it only in cask? Who actually brewed it? I seem toremember that J Smith (were it was brewed during its last years) wasclosed, am I wrong? Was it brewed directly by Courage? Any chanche tosee it bottled again? Max wrotesmallever...faresHi Max, I tried the cask Courage IRS at GBBF - I hope I don't add toomuch salt to the wound :~) by saying it was great - deep dark, strong,roasty, rich, fruity, bitter, complex, etc, etc, - everything a truestrong stout should be IMO.A chap called Silk Tork, a beerfan extraordinaire (regular contributorto has posted up a shedload of info about theGBBF cask version at‘93very interesting stuff it is too (techie in parts- he spoke with theirBrewing Dev Mgr, but very enthusiastic too) - nice to see brewers of a*big* international brewing co. being allowed to brew something theycould get their teeth into & be proud of, as they obviously & rightlywere.According to the Courage Brewing Development Manager (via Silk Tork's piece above) the beer was a one-off & won't be availablein bottled form (incidentally I read that the same brewer wasresponsible for "the world's most expensive beer" - which I presumewas the Ancient Egyptian style emmer beer that S&N did in...

All the aged Imperial Russian Stout I have tried have been superb, perhaps you haven't kept them very well. Unfortunately the same can not be said for Thomas Hardy's Ale which has ranged from reasonable to Bovril. The finest aged beer I have is a larg-ish collection of Thomas Sykes Old Ale in various guises, from the old Heritage brewery. These have been consistently superb, and I only wish I'd bought a few dozen more when they were brewing.

I've got some Thomas Hardy's from the mid 80's. I had one last year, It was amazing, unlike any beer I've had before or since, incredibly complex. Yum. I can't wait for another special occasion.

Ah - OK. It must be about 5 years since I drank a bottle, and I thought it was 11,3% or 11.5% abv.

Never mind, it's still a great beer.
