In Denial

I am just so gobsmacked about the lack of information about the forthcoming smoking ban in England.

In Scotland for weeks and months before, posters, notices etc were everywhere. I every pub I have been ion England recently - nothings.

WTF?

We're in England, and we seem to be deluged with it. Here's a particularly fine example - not the world's prettiest website but I can hear Jane's voice as I read.

Must go, I've got a bit of that pig under my grill.

Well round here (Coventry) it's on the side of every bus, on advertisement hoardings, in the bar of the club I go to.. where are you looking?

I am looking in Middleton, Greater Manchester and despite my less than erudite original posting, (in the pub for perhaps too long) I have seen very little about it. None of the pubs I have been in, in Manchester or Middleton, say a word about what is going to happen.

Hence my posting.

If your experience is different - do tell.

Is this supposed to be a helpful comment or are you just being silly.

Let me think...........................

1.7 million packs were sent to employers in April.

Well, many of the English pubs will be closing after the ban, so why publicise it?

What do you want to know? There is a huge amount of information out there but you're coming across as one of those people who isn't happy unless someone actually knocks on your door. If you want to know about something, for goodness sake get off your derriere and find out!

You are an idiot. My point is not that I don't know much about it. In fact I know rather a lot. Probably a damn sight more than you you condescending numpty.

My point, however badly stated, is that in the pubs themselves, there isn't much. Few posters or notices etc. That may not matter a jot, but it is just something that struck me and I thought (this is usenet after all) I'd ask what others thought.

I suggest too that your needless un helpfulness and daft assumptions about me make you come across as plonker. But then unless your self awareness is as undeveloped as your manners, you probably know that.

Cheers Peter

Well I thought your posting was clear, don't know why people have chosen to misunderstand it. Having waited for the effects of a day out in Mncr to dissipate (unbeknowingly researching your point?), I have to agree with you. Its surprising how few pubs are actually advertising the fact. Locally, its only a tiny minority who are drawing attention to it. Denial, head in the sand, indifference? The vast majority of pubs don't seem to have made any attempt to ease the ban in either. Surely making the change over from Saturday-Sunday that much more difficult? Very odd.

The pubs don't seem to be preparing all that well either. The last one I was in had a brass "Thank you for not smoking at the bar" sign, and some of the tables had "no smoking area" inscribed on them.

I bet not, but only time will tell which of us is correct.

But the above have been in place for SOME time. Ie NO smoking at the BAR in front and behind has been or should have been in place for a number of years. NO smoking at tables IF the pub serves food then at certain times of the day then it becomes a NO smoke area

Anyway all of the above is junked this weekend and a NO smoke is in situ.

Whether its been handled well as to 'promotion' thats a hard thing to tell BUT surely one has to be on another planet NOT to have seen some advertising the fact - telly, pub, etc.

In fact i noticed that a city centre bus shelter has NOW got a NO SMOKING sticker.

And ALL shops even small ones(1 person operated) have to be NO smoking ; i found out that the shop where i have magazines bound ,she has to operate a NO smoke and that is one of her 'vices'

Peter, you are the idiot. As you admit yourself your point was badly stated. And I would say that your manners are poor - calling me names, tut tut!

And surely that is the crucial thing. We know there is a ban happening on Sunday - what can a pub tell us that we don't already know?

He also hasn't realised that this is primarily a workplace ban and most of the info has gone to employers and venue managers - it's up to them to comply.

Very good point - the onus is not on pubs to disseminate information to the public - that has been done ad nausem anyway.

I think a lot of pubs have done this especially those part of chains - eg
