I concede this point, but I can't se the argument that sensible drinking is promoted by this; it seems to me that it is rather the younger, lager/bottle drinking contingent who benefit (probably to the detriment of the neighbourhood).

I don't know anything about London specifically, but when I was at Warwick (until a year ago) I was a very active member of the Real Ale Society there. We weren't affiliated with CAMRA, though we were on friendly terms with the local branch. We had socials every two weeks, as well as an increasing number of trips further afield to pubs, breweries and beer festivals. We also ran our own Festival each year; during my time there it expanded from 70 beers to 101.
I think Warwick is one of the more active university ale societies (though Bristol went through a phase a couple of years ago) but if your university has one it could be well worth joining.
