Hi Folks

Some help please. We'll be staying in Bibury, mid-August. Have had a look in the GBG but still looking for inspiration around and about.

Any ideas please? Also, any suggestions for good pub food (preferably with real ale)?

Thanks johnnysaint

Two suggestions from the Good Pub Guide (both "lucky dips"):

  1. Swan:

Hotel in lovely spot facing River Coln, comfortable and attractive side bar used by locals with well kept Hook Norton Best and Wickwar Cotswold Way, exemplary bar stools, coal fire and long mural of jazz garden party, nice modern adjoining brasserie with enjoyable up-to-date food, good service, smart formal dining room; teak tables out on heated flagstoned terrace, pleasant waterside garden, luxurious bedrooms.

  1. Catherine Wheel:

Open-plan main bar and smaller back rooms, low beams, stripped stone, good log fires, well kept Adnams and Wadworths 6X, reasonably priced food from sandwiches up, traditional games, no smoking raftered dining room; picnic-sets in attractive and spacious garden with play area, famously beautiful village, handy for country and riverside walks (can be busy in summer); children welcome, picnic-sets out behind, open all day.

Nothing I can see in the Good Beer Guide.

Try the Fox at Little Barrington (roughly here - ). It's one of the very few pubs owned by Donnington Brewery. I remember it mainly for the quality of its XXX Mild.

I see that the Beerintheevening site has it listed, but not in flattering terms: . I would agree that it's not the prettiest of pubs internally, but TBH I get sick of all the wannabee restaurants that pass for pubs in the Cotswolds. The Fox is a place where drinking comes first, and it doesn't go chasing after the tourist dollar.

BrianW mentioned the New Inn at Coln St Aldwyns. This used to be fantastic, somehow pulling off the rare feat of making both drinkers and diners feel equally welcome. I've not been there for a while but I hear from local chums that it's Not What It Used To Be.

Again from the Good Pub Guide, the Inn For All Seasons - also in Little Barrington - comes highly recommended, with a food award:

The GPG has been a good friend on our tours for many a year, and has seldom let us down. We used to report regularly on pubs for them. As for the New Inn, I haven't been round those parts recently, but yes, pubs can indeed go downhill rapidly - especially after a change of landlord!

Sadly they don't brew that any more.
