It occurs to me that the forthcoming reduction in VAT from 17.5 to 15% should result in a reduction of around 5p a pint based on an average price of £2.10.
Hands up all those who think that the reduction will just be "absorbed" by Breweries/Pub Companies and Landlords and in fact we'll see no reduction at all.
The government are putting up tax to grab the difference.
No, it'll be "absorbed" by the corresponding increase in tax on alcohol that is also being introduced (As well as increase in petrol and tobacco taxes).
CAMRA have issued a statement on this:
It hasn't occurred to those pygmies in Westminster that if you close pubs by raising duty you don't actually collect any extra revenue.Somebody must have voted for these idiots.............

So how do you explain the VAT fiasco as exposed in various papers this morning? The real people making the decisions are the civil servants - you know, those people who don't get elected, who have jobs for life because they know if they foul up then someone who has been elected will be sacked or resign instead of the real culprit.
