The Itchen Valley Brewery Tap

I went into my local 'spoons this evening and walked out again; the only choice of guest beers they had was: Itchen Valley, Itchen Valley, or Itchen Valley. Not that I have an objection to them (actually I find that they all have a similar "dirty" tasty, there is plenty of choice available for a few pence more). When did Wetherspoons buy Itchen Valley? Or was it the other way around? I walked out again and went somewhere with more variety, I doubt I shall go back for a l-o-n-g time. Cheap is nice, but variety and quality are more impatient. Z

Which Wetherspoons was this? Was it fairly local to Itchen Valley? i.e. Winchester, Southampton, etc.

I disagree (great this freedom of opinion stuff!). I rarely find Itchen Valley beer around and love to drink a pint of Godfathers or Pure Gold - yum!

Alex.

No, it was The Grid Inn, Southfields, London.

The Pure Gold is quite drinkable, but most the others...

In marked contrast to the situation of a few years ago, JDW seem to be very big on local beers these days - albeit always from their preferred suppliers.

In East Anglia we always get several Ridleys and Woodfordes beers in every JDW. I have also noticed a preponderance of Itchen Valley beers in the Hants area, and Loddon in the Thames Valley area.

The two Wetherspoons in Lancaster often advertise beers they haven't got, and leave them displayed as available after you've found out they're not on.

Mine has a chalk-board proclaiming all the beers that are coming and how proud they are of them, but all they seem to have is Itchen Valley which is neither on the board or in the tasting notes; I think I might follow the exodus.

I've resolved never to go in the ones in Lancaster again. The air conditioning is freezing, the staff can't pour a pint of real ale without half of it spilling over the side of the glass, there's never the full range of beers advertised, and someone died after a fight outside one of them the other week.

I know it will sound very snobbish, but if you sell cheap beer, you sometimes get cheap people.

It does also depend on the area, my local Wetherspoons gets mostly reasonable people (staff and customers), not far away a typical priced pub has semi-evolved simians both sides of the bar. I think I might be doing an injustice to simians, they are more accurately described as failed alpha males (mostly gammas). There is nothing snobbish in choosing articulate educated company.
