'Spoons of disgust

I was in the 'spoons pub in South Fields this evening and was quite disgusted by one of the bar staff who was putting out washed glass behind the bar whilst chewing gum with her mouth open and spittle fling everywhere. Do they not train staff on hygiene? Needles to say I did not wait to risk a second pint.

Quite apart from being disgusting, this probably constitutes 'eating' under health and safety rules and would therefore be illegal!

'Spoons are extremely varied, I think dependent on the attitude and competence of the manager. Some JDW bar staff are as good as you could hope for anywhere - attentive, friendly, well informed, dispensers of full pints etc. Others are none of the above :-)

While I agree that the quality of service, hygiene, full measures, beer availability etc. in a Spoons pub usually depends on the manager on the premises at the time why is it their pubs seem to degrade to being unacceptable in all areas when that manager moves on? The change is very noticeable within days of a good manager being ' rotated.

I've seen the same thing happen when the landlord changes in a one man and his small staff operation however in a Spoons pubs there are hundreds of staff that will not have changed and the manager is often the faceless figurehead.

This has got to be down to the attitude of the staff they employ or the training given. Perhaps the underlying 'have a nice day' or 'do you want fries with that' style of service doesn't work in the UK pub trade where the staff think it is b*****t.

Wethersppons are cheap, therefore they pay peanuts, therefore they get monkeys.

What do you expect?

The expensive pubs also employ monkeys (one managed to throw an empty pint glass at my pint of beer the other day, smashing both and showing me with glass and beer!), perhaps a bit more effort on training is required.
