Whitelocks Leeds

I don't know what is true and what is false, but I do believe Whitelock's is an asset to Leeds. The job description advertised here

$ does not bode well for the food served in Spirit Group pubs.

Is food designed, prepared and cooked by accountants a recipe for disaster or success? Their food may not have been good before, but if what I've tasted of Spirit Group elsewhere is anything to go by - rather you eat than me.

Well the press in general do seemed to have jumped on a story created by some noisy people - the noisy people do seem to be the story though IMO.

Price wise, it's only just above average for Leeds - ie. expensive as any city centre pub. I'm sure you can find much more expensive places (I know you can) in the centre of Leeds.

Yes, it can be described as having a bit of a theme - though admittedly not on the same scale as something like The Maltings in York.

I'm still only going to head for The Grove or the Duck And Drake when next in Leeds centre.

One of the other really annoying things about Whitelocks (before we dumped it and moved on) was that on friday night they would be serving food in the side room when there was about 2000 people trying to find space to drink in the bar.

We've walked out numerous times before hand because of the lack of space and they hadn't finished the food so that room couldn't be used by the people who just wanted to drink. And the top bar is invariably closed.

The one time I've seen food in Whitelocks was when someone in our group ordered a steak sandwich - the bread was dry, the steak was dry, even the side salad was dry. We've never felt the need to try the food further after that.

If, as per the press, these complaining want roast meat I suggest they go to the Grove.

Personally I far prefer spaghetti etc. to roast meat anyway.

Fair comment - and many of them don't even serve real beer. To be honest, I didn't drink that often in the city centre - the Pack Horse up by the uni was my local choice for a good pint.

Ah, the Duck & Drake - now there's a proper pub!

I was born in Leeds and still regularly visit. I used to seek out Whitelocks, but no longer bother as it's almost impossible to find anywhere to sit. However it is an institution, and it would be a pity to see it dumbed down into today's idea of a theme pub.

The City of Mabgate is a sad loss.

Never liked the Pack Horse.

The Sam Smiths next door is much better, relatively.

It's on form now, has been bad in the past.

Talking about pubs near the Uni (Engineering Block) what about the swan with two knicks used to haunt there on a Friday lunch 30 years ago. Lovely pork pie and peas. Also it was a venue on several occasions for drink a pub dry

It's now a quite threatening, worn out definitely locally pub where students aren't welcome (or at least was a year or two back when I went.)

There's always the Chemic, and the Bricklayers, thank goodness.

You could always get a good pint of Landlord in the Packhorse. Tbh, I don't recall a Sam Smiths pub next door - but it is nearly 10 years since I lived in Leeds so my memory is a bit hazy. I bet none of them are the same as they were back then.

The Sam Smiths pub is the Angel, up a parallel alley off Briggate.

I had a reasonable pint of OBB in there a couple of weeks ago, and an excellent pint of their new (live?) keg wheat beer.

Ah, now I see - you're thinking of the other Pack Horse. I was thinking of the one up by the uni on Woodhouse Lane.

Went in Whitelocks last night, seems normal so far at least.

Real ales on: John Smiths cask Theakston Bitter Theakston XB Theakston Old Peculier York IPA (very good) York Chariot of Fire (OK) Wentworth Needles Eye Daleside Shrimper (very good).

Also noticed in big letters on the blackboard, as if to make a point, that roast dinners are available every day, beef, lamb and pork. Bangers and mash and steak pie still on menu, no obvious changes.

Apparently a couple of weeks ago most of the clips were turned round on the Saturday night because of cellar cooling problems.
