Yard of Ale

Just bought a Yard of Ale glass off eBay. Any tips for how best to use it, or should it just be a novelty nik-nak for the living room ?

Novelty item, and party toy.

The received wisdom on drinking from a yard is that starting by spinning it before raising it and continuing to do so at just the right rate will allow air up the shaft while liquid flows down and out. You also need to be able to all but open your throat to pour the beer down.

This of course was not one of the unofficial courses at the University of Aston in Birmingham in the late 1970's, and I never had any practice. (Nor did I have anything to do with large vaguely spherical sculptures moving around campus in dead of night)

Fill it full of beer and down the contents?

Although I've never done it myself, I have watched "downing a yard of ale" being attempted once or twice at college and the trick seemed to be to turn the yard whilst supping. No idea why that helped though. Oh, and using a low ABV but non fizzy beer helped.

Much the same reason for things lifting in a tornado. In this case the air to replace the draining beer goes up the middle (or thereabouts)

No fizz erupting in the drinkers throat. Try drinking a large quantity of cola down in one go...

Is your "?" key stuck?

It isn't a suction effect, more a guidance of the infill air. The liquid leaves and has to be replaced, you have that happen in a rush with a consequent rush of liquid (into your face) just after or you can control it.
