John’s Grocery Beer Dept. International Liaison to lead Exclusive Belgian Beer Tastings
John’s Grocery of Iowa City, one of the premier beerstores of the Upper Midwest, will host two Exclusive Belgian Beer Tastings during the month of August at The Motley Cow Café, 327 E. Market, Iowa City Iowa. Tastings will be on August 2nd & 16th (both Saturdays), from 1:00 – 3:00 PM.
Prices for the Exclusive Belgian Tasting are $25 advance singles; $35 advance 2-er’s/couples/bring-a-friend; $25 each day-of-event. Seating is limited, so advance purchase is recommended. Admission prices cover the cost of facility rental, instruction, and expertise; there is no fee for the beer per se (i.e. no “per glass” cost). John’s Grocery routinely holds public beertastings from 1-3 PM on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month. Tastings are lead by Eric Nielsen, a U-CA Davis-trained & Institute of Brewing London Certified Master Brewer. “My explicit goal is to develop the best beer tastings in the United States,” Nielsen remarked prior to departure. “This exclusively Belgian tasting will be an absolutely top-drawer event, completely consistent with that goal!”
This tasting event will also provide an opportunity to learn more about the Belgian Beer Tours that are being offered this fall, also to be lead by Nielsen and co-sponsored by John’s Grocery. Travel savvy for these tours will be provided by beertrips.com, augmented by help from Nielsen’s Belgian contacts on-site.

Truly Belgian beer lineup potentially includes: Westvleteren 12; Gouden Carolus; Hoegaarden Julius; Kasteel Bruin; Triple Karmeliet; Binchoise Flora (spring special brew), Blonde, Brune & Reserve Special; Framboises from Liefmann's, Lindemann's, & La Choulette; Huyge Delerium Noel, Delerium Tremens & Guillotine; St. Feuillen Blonde & Cuvee du Noel; Duvel; Mardesous Triple (10); Lindeman's Faro; a range of products from De Dolle Brewers; a representative lineup from Van Steenberge including Piraat, Gulden Draak, Augustin, and both Bornums (Double & Triple); Quintine / Brasserie Ellezelles Amber; Caracole Nostradamus; Val Dieu Triple; Malheur Triple (10), Auchouffe Bok & N'ice; a range of 'tIJ products; several lambics including a selection of Cantillons, Hansens, and Lindeman's Cuvee Renee; Konigshoeven Quadruple (formerly labelled as La Trappe); others as time and interest permit.
For domestically produced products which reflect the Belgian brewing tradition, we will have available Allagash Grand Cru, Wit, and Triple Reserve; Unibrowe Trois Pistolets, Don de Dieu, and Maudit; and a limited selection of Hair of the Dog products from Portland.
