Probably short for "shandygaff," the name I've heard. Can also be made with ginger ale.

I think the beer they tend to use is a waste already (it's a 'd' not a 't'):

"Shandy", perchance ? indeed short for "Shandygaff"...

It's usually done with crap beer anyway, land pale lager or such...

I could be a ladies drink, much like Black velvets in Scotland. IIRC a Black Velvet is half hard cider and half Guiness Stout or maybe any other stout that's available. I tried it once but I prefer my stout to be straight. YMMV. Cheers! Dominick
