Fermcap-unwanted effects

Nov 02, 2005 1 Replies

Hi, I've been using a teaspoon of Fermcap (5 gallon batch) to avoid boilovers for the past couple of brews. It is very effective and the beer has come out tasting great. However, I am suspicious that the Fermcap might be affecting the head retention. Has anyone experienced this?

I don't know anything about Fermcap, but if you are concerned, why not use a cheaper, checmical free approach? Just keep a spray bottle with cold water next to the pot. When the froth of the boil starts to get too high, give it a few good shots with the water. Works everytime for me, and it only needs to be done during the first 5-10 minutes of the boil.
