Don't worry about the bottom/top distinction very much. They all work just about the same. A **TRUE** top fermenting yeast is OBVIOUSLY a top fermenter and layers of yeast will arise to the top of the foam. There are only a few of these that you might really get. Otherwise they all act about the same.
CO2 bubbles is about the only indicator. If it is very active, you'll see motion/swirling of particles in the beer.
