just starting to delve into the small batch american whiskey field. are there any web sites, or newsgroups aprticular to them? i'm only asking here because of the obvious connection. no flame wars needed ;=)

I doubt you'll get flames for asking that. We frequently talk about non-scotch whiskies.
I'm sure some folks will answer directly, but here's another route:
If you go to google, click on "more" above the search field, then on "groups" and then enter the search terms
alt.drinks.scotch-whisky bourbon
you'll get 600 or so hits, pretty well all of them for posts discussing the topic you're interested in, many of them from some of the wise elder whisk(e)y gods who have posted here over the years.
