2003 Feudi di San Gregorio Serpico

I stumbled across this bottle in my orphan bin and opened with some simple grilled steaks and a green salad. 2003 Feudi di San Gregorio is a 100% Aglianico from Campania ( I had to look it up since the wine was gifted to me some time ago). The wine was slightly clouded and quite dark, almost black, in the glass. Fairly tight nose of black earth, blackberry bushes and a slight floral note. A bit tough and tight on the palate showing black fruits, a bit of black cherry stands out and a fairly strong bitter finish much like cold espresso. Not a charming wine and even after two hours I couldn't coax much more out of the nose or palate. "C"

Bill, I suspect that you may have caught this wine in a closed-down stage of its development. Aglianico is often called the Nebbiolo of the South, as it is quite tannic and takes time to develop. Also, 2003 was not the year in Campania that it was in France. In a region that is normally quite hot, '03 wasn't much hotter, so the wines produced were well structured and ageworthy. I don't know much about Feudi di San Gregorio's Aglianicos, but I've had good experiences with the wines I have had from them.

Serpico is one upscale bottling from Feudi di San Gregorio and my guess would be that you opened it 10 years early.

I had one bottle of a recent vintage (in a tasting) and had your very same experience.
