TN:1999 Poliziano Rosso di Montalcino

Rummaging around in the orphan bin I found this one to open tonight with roasted chicken. The color was a tad brickish with pronouced clearing at the rim. The nose was still fairly fresh with black cherry and graphite notes. The wine was medium bodied on the palate with fairly straightforward black cherry and coffee flavors with a hint of anise. It did exhibit a bitterness across the palate and finished with a fair amount of rough tannins and acidity. Probably a bit past it's prime. I paid $12 on release. "C+"on the Dale scale.

I believe that Poliziano could hardly name any wine from Montalcino. Poliziano cannot be but from Montepulciano, nearly by definition ;-)

Montepulciano= Mons Politianus from where (btw) the 15th century poet Angelo Ambrogini (who was born there) took the name by which he is better known (Poliziano).

Thanks for the correction. This is what happens when typing after too much wine. I was drinking a glass of La Palazzetta's Rosso di Montalcino as I typed the notes and I had Montalcino on my mind instead of Montepulciano.
