I just posted a review of this wine here:

Admittedly, this is partially a shameless plug for my site Days That End in "Y"

However, it's mostly to ask if anyone else is familiar with this wine, so I can compare notes. It's the 2004 vintage of Niersteiner Spiegelberg Muller-Thurgau Kabinett Julius Clauss.

I thought the wine was horrible. It mostly smelled and tasted like a riesling, but it also had this rotten smell and taste to it, especially the really nasty aftertaste. It kind of reminded me of a dirty sock, and I began to gag. However, I'm unsure as to whether it was just that bottle or if it was the entire vintage. I have another bottle of it, but I'm reluctant to open it up right now to compare. Also, when it comes to wine, I still feel like a novice, so it's appreciated to have more expert advice.

Thanks!

Clauss is unknown to me. However, even when a poor winemaker and a bad wine your description indicates something was very wrong with this bottle. Certainly, the Spiegelberg is a Grosslage and thus the wine is not a top ranking one, but even lower qualities of German whites do not exhibit this kind of taste and smell, believe me. At the worst they have flat taste and little flavour and a nauseating sweetness - but, rotten? No, not in general.

Now, there could have been an excess of sulphur dioxide, but even so the description does not fit. Hydrogen sulfide sounds more like it, H2S - but that is pretty extraordinary. Try another bottle - if that is the same, complain! Anders
