OK, I'll bite, Emery: what do you mean in this context by umami? A meaty note? A savory senstation? I must confess that I've normally thought of umami with older wines that have developed tertiary notes. I am a bit unsure what to make of it in the context of a youngish Bdx.

Ha, I knew I'd get someone with that! :) I do mean a savory sensation, for me umami is very difficult to describe but somehow I seem to know it when I taste it. One of the strongest sensations I get is with grilled unagi wrapped in seaweed. It's kind of a mouth sensation or synthesis; and this wine definitely had it. I agree it's not something commonly found in young brodux. Sometimes just the right cheese match can bring out this note in a red wine for me...
