99 Ormes de Pez / 00 Labergorge

99 Ormes de Pez - Ste Estephe: Very tarry and stiff, a brooding youngster still, but opening with air to a well balanced and chewy mouthful, good typicity.

00 Ch. Labergorce - Margaux: Nice full and lush nose, in the mouth an immediate umami sensation with nice black cherry. Not going anywhere but this should be on the "drink soon" list.

still, but opening

OK, I'll bite, Emery: what do you mean in this context by umami? A meaty note? A savory senstation? I must confess that I've normally thought of umami with older wines that have developed tertiary notes. I am a bit unsure what to make of it in the context of a youngish Bdx.

Ha, I knew I'd get someone with that! :) I do mean a savory sensation, for me umami is very difficult to describe but somehow I seem to know it when I taste it. One of the strongest sensations I get is with grilled unagi wrapped in seaweed. It's kind of a mouth sensation or synthesis; and this wine definitely had it. I agree it's not something commonly found in young brodux. Sometimes just the right cheese match can bring out this note in a red wine for me...
