Bardolino and zinfandel ??

More questions from this newbie:

I picked up a bottle of Bolla Bardolino at a wine store (while also buying a couple of inexpensive wines which had been recommended here). The Bardolino is really very nice and very drinkable. Reminds me of Chianti. Am I wrong or are Chianti and Bardolino related?

If they are, what other wines belong in this "family"? I seem to like them better than the "stronger" Cabernets.

Also, "zinfandel" (not white zin, which is very sweet , but the red zinfandel) -- what kind of wine is that?

Thanks for any assistance,

Jay

I think Bardolino is mostly Corvina, no Sangiovese. But I do think that many central to northern Italian wines have a sense of ....Italianess. And weightwise many basic Chiantis are similar to Bardolina, lighter wines with good acidity.

Zinfandel is a grape (same as Primitivo in southern Italy), that can be made in a variety of styles. You'd be hard pressed to believe that a Turley or Renwood Grandpere was made from the same grape as a Ravenswood Vintners Blend. But if I had to generalize I'd say berry fruit-driven with an edge of spice.

Not really.

Try some Sicilian wines. You'll go totally berserk.
