Book Review: The Dictionary of Drink 2007

The Dictionary of Drink; Graham & Susan Edwards,Sutton Publishing Ltd;

1977 is a revision of The Language of Drink first published in1988. It is a paperback of 1440 rather large pages with fairly small print. It is in typical dictionary style, and most topics are quite concise. It has 57,000 A-Z entries. It includes wines of most of the major, and some of the minor, vineyards of the world. It includes spirits, over 4000 cocktails, coffee, tea, milk and over 1500 mineral waters.

Of course one can find a few bones to pick in something this massive. I could only spot check a few things. The entry for Eszencia makes clear that it is made from the free run juice of botrytised grapes. However the entry for Tokaji Essencia says to see Tokaji Aszu Essencia, which is listed as an alternate spelling of Tokaji Aszu Eszencia. Tokaji Aszu Eszencia. is rightly described as being made from botrytis attaced grapes. However this long path of definitions would imply that Tokaji Essencia is not made from free run juice. This entry should have sent you directly to Eszencia rather than a trip around the world to finally land you at the somewhat wrong definition. However I did not find a lot of serious errors in the short time I spent looking for them.

There are vintage years listed for each port house going back well into the 1800s. Also vintage years are listed for most Champagne houses. If you know just one word in the name of a not-too-well known wine, this book may allow you to find exactly what it is. For example, there are vineyards in Germany in the M-S-R, Nahe, and Rheinhessen regions named Falkenberg. However Falkenbergquelle is a natural spring mineral water from Lohne in Germany, with a chemical analysis of the mineral content given.

A few random entries follow. Iksir is Turkish for elixir/liqueur. Imsdal is a sparkling natural spring mineral water from Kilden i Imsdalen, Norway. Laat-Oes is S African for late harvested. Spagnol is a rare white grape grown in Provence. Sozzled Swine is an ale brewed by the Ring 'O' Bells Brewery in Cornwall. Zacinka is a red wine produced in eastern Serbia. Ziem Vineyards at Fairplay, Maryland, in the USA and produces hybrid wines.

I found this book in the US at Amazon.com at a very reasonable price, especially considering how large it is.

Is this the same book as is listed by Amazon as "The Dictionary of Drink" by Graham Edwards (no Susan)? Or is it THE DICTIONARY OF DRINK: AN A-Z GUIDE TO EVERY TYPE OF BEVERAGE by SUE EDWARDS & GRAHAM EDWARDS ?

The prices of either are reasonable for non-mass market paperbacks.

Yes. It seems Amazon's description of this neglected Susan. If you enlarge the image of the front cover next to the description you will find that it indeed is by Graham & Susan Edwards. This book was published in 2007.

Or is it

No. That is an earlier hard cover book published in 1996 that is less complete and somewhat dated. There is no image of the book cover by the description.
