Bordeaux

What is a Bordeaux. Is it a region, blend or something else? I always thought it was a type of grape, but the last two I've tried were blends of Cab/Merlot. Any information is appreciated.

Bordeaux is a region of France, red wines from the region also called claret in the UK are blends of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc and malbec, whites are blends of sauvignon blanc & semillion. There are further appelations based on geography. Besides Bordeaux and Bordeaux Superior. there is the Medoc one one side of the Gironde River and the Haut Medoc the northern part of that. The Haut Medoc is split into communes of St Estephe, Pauilliac, Marguax and Graves. On the other side of the Gironde the Right Bank are St Emilion and Pomorol further out are the satellite communes of Bourg, Blaye and Lalande de Pomerol. I may have left a few appellations out, but I'm sure there will be other posts.

I didn't miss anything, since I did not comment Joe Beppe's posting, but Mark's.

Are you sure Ian? I thought Mouton Cadet was generic Bordeaux, with the Reserve having the Medoc appelation. I think that Pauillac might be on the label, but in little letters- just an address (just as my CdRs from Voge and Clape say Cornas, and my Lafarge Bourgogne Rouge Volnay). Dale

Don't think so.

And Graves.

Could be, since 33250 Pauillac is the official siege of the company ("POB 117", btw). The premises of "Les Vins Baron Philippe de Rotnschild S.A." (formerly known as "La Baronnie" formerly known as "La Bergerie") is in St-Laurent. From the outside it looks like the crossing of an ultra modern dairy with a spaceship or computer production site.
