Can anyone help please?

Hi All,

My niece is going to visit the VA area of the USA on thursday, and sent me this email. I'm a broken reed but I thought someone here would be bound to be able to help. So:- here's her email.

Do you know of a good place to eat for seafood/local specialities in Hampton, Virginia, > or do you have a chum in America who can help? We are off to America on Thursday > morning for a friend's wedding - v. short trip since are coming back Sunday > night. We have Friday night free and I wanted to go and get crab cakes or > something somewhere. I remember you having a lot of fun on the East coast > when you were in the States with regards to eateries although I think this > was further south (?) Not looking for anything fancy - just good.

Any suggestions either to my email (ian at souvigne dot com) or here, would be wonderful.

As they say in all the best circles.

Thanks in advance.

Kincaids at the MacArthur Center in downtown Norfolk is great. They have a decent selection of wine.

Unfortunately the best seafood places are not in Hampton. The Tides Inn which is on the Rappahanock River in Irvington is one of the best examples of Virginia low country seafood. In fact, if you head into Virginia' Northern Neck which borders the western side of Chesapeake Bay toward the Potomac River any small place you stop at will have wonderful seafood some of the best in the country. I really can't recommend any seafood places in Hampton or Newport News, VA which are right next to each other. Bobby's Americana in Hampton is about the best restaurant there and features southern cooking and I find it a good restaurant.

Hampton, Virginia,

Captain George's Seafood Restaurant, 2710 W. Mercury Blvd, Hampton (757 826

1435), I've never eaten at the one in Hampton, since I live on the "southside" in Chesapeake, about 30 miles from Hampton. I have eaten at their restaurant in Pungo (closer to my home). They have a seafood buffet. However, I was not a wine drinker the last time I ate there, so I cannot give any information on their wines. They specialize in a buffet, with many different seafoods. For a really first class restaurant (little known to tourists - since they do not advertise), Steinhilder's Thalia Acres Inn, 653 Thalia Road, Virginia Beach, 757 340 1156. They are on the waterfront of one of the small streams, I've only had steaks there, but everything I've tried has been delicious. Expect about $30 per person, plus whatever one orders to drink. This may not be in her desires, but I did feel that it would be better to mention it, since you may not have many chances to communicate with her before Friday.

But it would be rude not to thank you individually (after the "wine writers are idiots" thread, to hell with the bandwidth!).

Thanks very much indeed.

This may be closer to what she was looking for, though honestly I don't know!

Many thanks to you and to the others. I've already sent off the first two replies, and Caroline sends her thanks in turn.

(And if anyone knows of others, keep 'em coming, please.)
