Can I carry on two bottles of wine?

I am flying from Miami to New York next Month to celebrate a friends birthday and I wanted to take two special bottles of wine. Can I carry them on? (Something tells me no.) Can I pack them in a bag and check the bag? What's the best way to do this to avoid thievery and damage?

Take the bottles to a slhipping company or a wine shop that ships and ship them to yourself or to your friend. No carryon adn packing them in your luggage is risky at best.

I've checked in 9 bottles of wine - a cardboard case for 12, a sheet of bubbly plastic lining the bottom, then around each bottle in a wave pattern and topping with a layer of the same sheet. Case was put in a sports bag with some thick sweaters or towels around it. Total weight with toiletries

14.9kilos, below Ryan Airs limit of 15 :-). Rest of baggage in a carry-on, up to 10kilos. Anders

I've flown with wine many times, and these days I usually place them in a styrofoam shipper (which you can purchase from many wine retailers) and check it in. I've also placed bottles in my luggage, taking care to wrap them to avoid breakage. Both methods work in my experience.

Packing them carefully in your checked luggage works, but can provide for some anxious moments. We brought 8 bottles back from Italy wrapped in our dirty clothes and some bubble wrap. I was distressed to see red liquid all over our big suitcase as it came down the luggage chute in PHL. Luckily it turned out to be some sugary drink some luggage handler had spilled on the bag, and not our wine. It survived intact.

Just to add to the paranoia. Flying in summer results in bags sitting for some long periods in the sun. If yours is on top of the heap . . . cooked wine. It is a gamble at best. Joseph Coulter Joseph Coulter Cruises and Vacations LLC

Depends on what the wine is and how special they are. For instance, at Sea-Tac there are now two shops stocking excellent wines once you get past security. The Vino Volo shop carries a lot of better wine, so you may have an option like that.

I've also taken half a dozen bottles to Mexico in a shipper box checked in as luggage. Not coincidentally, El Tesoro de Don Felipe reposado tequila comes in Bordeaux-sized bottles in Mexico. I didn't see any reason to leave the shipper there, or to bring it back empty, so...
