Chinon 2002 Joguet

Labeled Cuvee Terroir I instantly thought cuvee Terrible. Hugh Johnson notes in the 2005 Pocket Enclyclopedia of Wine that "Beware of a whiff of rot in many of the Gamay-based [sic] wines." Chinon is supposedly Cab. Franc but the rot is there in this one so much so that I would have to say this Chinon should no(t) be drunk.

I let it sit, the funk settled sown but the wine that was left was a tad sour and bitter, I let it sit over night, tried it with a hamburger, there is still wine in the glass. I really hope this is a flaw but I don't know what it would be, it was not corked that is all I know for sure.

On the Dale scale a solid D (at best).

Or, one must be drunk to drink this Chinon? :)

Certainly no Gamay in Chinon. But I've found very young CF can resemble it quite a bit. I wonder if that's what you had here. Wasn't he the one who tried "young vines" as a marketing gimmick?

I'm no fan of this producer, but this one sounds like a real failure. Usually solid enough wines. Too bad.

Has Dale ever given a D one his "easy scale?" :) I can't ever remember an A+, either! (Keep them coming Dale, I'm a fan of your notes...)

Emery, thank you for the opinion. I just noticed to my horror that I have another bottle of this stuff, Part of me says open her up and see if the first was a mistake, the other part says take it back, and then there is the voice of reason that says open her up then take it back so no one else gets taken in! Ahhh the quandry.

Hi,

Joguet wines are awfully difficult when young. I can tell you that I have experienced several disappointing wines from both Les Varennes du Grand Clos and Clos du la Dioterie. Closed and with plenty of animal notes, tannic as it could be, that's young Joguet. Whether they become great wines, I will have to open a bottle in the future.

It also seems that Charles Joguet himself retired from the business and the winery no longer has the same quality level. Speaking of Chinon, the bad/good bottles is so high that I do not really buy more Chinon anymore. Only wine that I really enjoyed was a Philippe Alliet Vielles Vignes "Mes Favorites" which I thought was delicious if a bit international.
