Don't often see wines like this on supermarket shelves in the UK, but I picked this up today at Waitrose for £9.69 ($19) US price seems to be around $15.
Interestingly the label identifies not just the varietal but the two counties ( Mendocino & Monterey) from which the grapes come.
Any advice as to how this rates as an example of a Californian syrah?

IMHO Hess Syrah is decent but nothing remarkable. Syrahs that show the typical California style would be Concannon (Livermore), Truchard (Napa), or on the lower end possibly Renwood (Amador) or Cline (Sonoma). Theres many more. California has some excellent syrahs.
I love a good Syrah but tend to prefer Aussie Shiraz.

The two best Shiraz/Syrahs I've had were Washington's C R Sandige's 2001 Klingele Vinyard, and Australia's R Wines First Class, I think 2004.
I've had more very good Washington Syrahs that Aussie Shiraz, but that's probably because I can go to tasting rooms of Washington wineries, and I really would rather taste a wine before I plunk down $25-35 for a bottle.
