Grain of salt? OK, but what then with The Australian Wine Research Institute (AWRI) Southcorp Wines in Australia Burgundian negociant Jean-Claude Boisset University of Burgundy South Australian winemaker Jim Irvine Australian wine scribe Max Allen Australian journal Winefront Monthly Australian wine critic James Halliday David Leyland Jeffrey Grosset
Should their opinions also be taken with a grain of salt? Certainly an Australian list, but surely Michael Pronay could provide us with an European one :-) Anders
Anders, I'm a screwcap fan overall. I just meant that the article was penned by someone who came with an agenda. I agree the vast majority of evidence is on the side of screwcaps, but TS is unlikely to cite the (much smaller) body of evidence that is anti-screwcap. In the interest of fairness I thought I should point out his history, just as I would point out any known bias of a pro-natural corker.

And I am actually quite neutral. I believe that I'm relatively TCA-insensitive too. But I do find the evidence presented so far to be in favour of screwcaps and I have indeed had one bottle of 24 year old Sangria (!) which was very good (!?!) :-) Yes, the article was written by an advocate but it did quote quite a number of credible people and organizations in the business. May the best closure win! Anders
Quite obviously you haven't read Tyson Stelzer's books "Screwed for Good" and "Taming the Screw". He has a serious scientific background holding degrees in physics and mathematics, and he clearly addresses anti-screwcap issues in both of them.

Michael, as I stated, I'm comfortable enough with screwcaps that I would happily buy even big long-aging reds under screwcap. I abhor the uncertainities of natural cork. But I also like to identify biases (even those that match mine). I'm also a firm believer in evolution, but if I was citing an article on evolution vs. "intelligent design" by James Randi or the late S.J. Gould, I'd mention that they maybe didn't come into the discussion without preconceptions.
I agree with everything TS said. But I also acknowledge that if you type "screwcap advocate" into Google, the first three entries are 2 references to TS and an article by him. The NZ Screwcap Initiative and the Australian Closure Fund hired him to write the manual on screwcaps. Knowing that does not reduce in any way the validity of his arguments, it's just useful information to have.
I bought them already: Ch. d'Agassac 2004 and 2005.
