TN: 2005 Loosen "Dr. L."

In my ongoing campaign to bring Jean around to Riesling, we last night unscrewed a bottle of 2005 Dr. Loosen "Dr. L." Riesling with a dinner of mesquite-smoked jerk chicken:

nose: peaches and a background minerality palate: sweeter and less acidic than the '04 Dr. L., it had forward peachy fruit and enough acidity to keep a clean finish

Purchased for $11 locally, this wine proved to be an excellent choice with the very spicy jerk chicken. With the food, it was not noticeably sweet but stood up wonderfully to the jerk paste (black pepper, allspice, cayenne, salt, onion, garlic, vinegar, habanero among other things). Jean was very fond of this wine, though for my $ I'd take the more taut and mineralic '04.

Nice choice. I'm yet to taste either of the Dr. L Rieslings, but my dad was waxing enthusiastic about a couple of them a few days ago.

As far as bringing people around to Riesling is concerned, I'd had the

05 Covey Run Columbia Valley Riesling ($8) with a few friends recently; none of whom were wine buffs or knew what Riesling was. Everyone loved it though - maybe worth trying? Great QPR. And I'd highly recommend Villa Maria's Rieslings as well - very light and enjoyable with good sweetness and acidity. Bit more expensive than the L or Covey Run, but also very worth it in my book.

[PS: Wine with jerk chicken though? Should have gone the Caribbean way and had a bit of rum and roti on the side. :-) ]

Unscrewed? Really?

So do you in general like more Rheingau/ Nahe?

Given my wife's long-term aversion to Riesling, I haven't made nearly as thorough a study of them as I have many other wines. To date, I'd say that my preferences lean to the Mosel, Austria and Alsace, but as I have more examples from the Rheingau and Nahe that may change.
