New wine website

EncycloWine is the first wiki encyclopedia about all aspects of wine, for everyone from the curious beginner to the seasoned connoisseur. It's non-commercial and community-based, so please check it out, browse around, and contribute if the spirit moves you:

I am far from convinced about the need. Wikipedia seems to be a long way ahead in terms of in-place information about wine. Take a look at the list of wanted pages and try searching for the terms in wikipedia.

Of course it is early days, but ATM I would ue wikipedia for wine information and put any writing effort in that direction.

Hi Steve,

It's an interesting issue that you raise, one that I thought about before creating EncycloWine. Here is a response that I wrote in Tom Wark's wine blog where that question was also asked (aside from an encouraging review):

Why create EncycloWine when Wikipedia is around? It is a little bit of "because we can" - there have been wikis created about tons of different topics big and small, and I was astonished that there was no wine wiki. Mostly though, I feel that Wikipedia is so broad in scope it is difficult to post or find specialized articles about wine. A wiki specific to wine is a way to bring ease of use to a subject that has thousands of components. Each component can be treated in-depth without "off-topic" interwiki links or articles to get lost in. Please don't get me wrong - I think Wikipedia is awesome, and I've contributed to non-wine articles there. And I'm obviously not interested in competing with it since EncycloWine has a different focus.

Personally I see no problem with the size and breadth of scope of WP. Search works fine. And when exactly does information become OT for wine?

Where I think you could win out is in the community aspect of things, and in being able to organize in non-enclypaedic ways that are more focussed on wine.
