Oddest item in your cellar

(1) A bottle of 1970 David Bruce Petite Syrah. This wine was _black_ on release, and sported 18% alcohol without any added brandy. In its youth it needed a week's aeration in the refrigerator to become approachable, and it was still a monster! Over the years, it's dropped a _ton_ of sediment and lost most of its color, but it's still a huge wine. BTW, this is a dry wine.

(2) A bottle of California "Burgundy" that was labeled in such a way that to a casual glance looked like a DRC wine. There was a lawsuit filed on behalf of the DRC over this bottling. The wine wasn't bad for the ~$3 US it sold for at the time, but it definitely isn't Burgundy!

The oddest item in our cellar is probably a > 100 yr old copper Calvados still. I dug it up while renovating the garden. Unfortunately it was -- as were most stills that people couldn't bother to hide -- axed by the excise men at some point. I also found the serpent that goes with it. Apparently it produced the Calvados for the farm here for many years.

Bottle-wise, the oddest item used to be the "Siemens Automotive" Armagnac that Adele received as a gift some years ago, but this has now migrated to the bar. (It's not bad, either.) So top honors must be taken by some 10 year old "poiré" left over from a huge batch we made. It was excellent in its youth but would probably get you very sick if you tried to drink it now...

I have a bottle of 1980 Chateau Giorgianni Blackberry Wine (one of only two in existence). It was drinking very well a few years ago. It was my brother's first winemaking effort and got me into it. He, I and another brother still make wine every year.

I also have a bottle from my grandfather marked "Wine 1945." There is only a few inches left and that is not drinking well.

well, nils, there's dead rat that we've been trying to pull from under the racks with a coat hanger. otherwise, unless you came for a visit and stepped inside, that would be the oddest.
