Ontario Wine Society - April PN TNs.

Hi All;

Following are my notes from the April PN tasting by the OWS (Niagara) held at Niagara College Winery April 27/04.

Wines (8) were exclusively Ontario Niagara product and were presented in two flights; Vintage years 2000 and 2002. Pricing is for 750ml in Canadian dollars.

2002

Daniel Lenko Estates - Quite dark in colour with a pronounced cherry nose. Full bodied and somewhat chewy in the mouth with a medium long finish. Quite well balanced. Score 11/15 C$ 40

Lailey Winery - Quite rusty in appearance with a strawberry nose. Somewhat thin and tight with a quite acidic finish. Score 7/15. C$ 35

Niagara College Tech. - Teaching Winery - Light cherry red visual with a pronounced cedary nose. A prominent vegetal taste with pronounced tannins and acids. Quite a long finish. Score 7/15. C$ 19

Malivoire Winery - Another light cherry red visual with very pronounced cherry on the nose. The wine was still quite tannic and tight with a light mouth feel and somewhat short finish. Score 6/15 C$ 26

2000

Henry of Pelham - Unfiltered - This wine was the hit of the evening! Supplied in magnums. Black dark cherry visuals with mellow barnyard on the nose. Round, fruity and mellow in the mouth this well balance wine had a very long and lingering finish. Score 14/15 C$ 20

Chateau Des Charmes - A close second - Light red glycerine visuals and pronounced cherry notes on the nose. This is a light mellow and rounded wine with well integrated acids and muted tannins. Medium finish. Score

13/15 C$ 17

Eastdell Estates - Quite light almost opaque visuals coupled with barely noticeable slightly metallic nose. This wine was quite thin and acidic with pronounced tannins. Score 5/15 C$ 15

Southbrook Estates - This thinly coloured wine had a quite pronounced vegetal nose. In the mouth it was thin, acidic and Brett contaminated. Score 4/15. C$ 25 This was the only non VQA wine of the tasting as the VQA panel had refused it certification.

Too bad they did not include the All Cdn Wine Competitions, " 2004 Red Wine of the Year" , a 2000 Pinot Noir reserve VQA from Cilento wines.

Chuck thanks for teh review, but somehow the names of the wines are missing. Was that your intention or did you leave them out by accident? Thanks Zed

Hello Zed;

The wines were all Pinot Noir of course and were so identified but I don't think they had further designations such as single vineyard or private brand names. I didn't examine labels individually but was generally familiar with all of them.

duh, I missed the PN in your notes, even after 3 times reading it. thanks again! i had given up on ontario Pinot Noir based on bad experience in the past, but I might give them another try based on your notes Zed
