R.W. (Johnny) Apple, R.I.P.

It was with great sorrow that I read today of the death of R.W. (Johnny) Apple, in my opinion one of the best and most versatile journalists of our time. He wrote brilliantly for the New York Times on just about every topic under the sun. Whether the subject was politics or food and wine (he loved them all, maybe the latter a little too much) he could always be counted on to render an informed and interesting analysis. They don't make them like him anymore. The world is a little poorer today for his not being here.

I was sorry to hear of his death. I enjoyed his analysis for years, and lately his food writing (and my wife Betsy found it funny that he always referred to "my wife Betsey" - I told her Times stylebook rules probably kept him from just saying Betsey). I remember first hearing of Apple from reading Crouse's "Boys on the Bus" and Hunter Thompson's "F & L on the Campaign Trail"

Yes, I was saddened to learn of his death, too. His name on the byline was as good a guarantee of excellence as I can think of (even more reliable than a Kermit Lynch import sticker). Here's the obit in the Times for those who care:

In addition to the obit, they also published on web today an article on "10 restaurants worth flying to" that Apple had written (intended for later publication, but in honor of his memory they went ahead):
