Retail shelf life

One problem I come up against rather frequently is seeing wines from older vintages on store shelves and not knowing whether I should take a chance on them. This is particularly true when trying to get Californian wines here in Germany, especially Zins and Chards. Rosenblum apparently no longer exports to Germany - how far back can I realistically go without running too big a risk that the wine is past its peak? Do I really want to spend 40 euros for Newton Unfiltered Chard from 1999? Another example: I recently saw Babich 2005 SB in a shop. I know (or think that I know) that NZ SB should be enjoyed young. I realize that the wine won't be vinegar yet, but will it still be reasonably close to it peak?

Dave (Anxiously awaiting the release of the 3G iPhone in Germany so that I could look some of this stuff up the next time I am in a shop!)

Nix the Newton. I have mine stored at 55F and the 1999 is showing it's age.
