TN:Sauzet simple burg 2005

Easter Saturday, cold and sleety, so I go for a cold chicken terrine with minty potatoes, ( first sprigs of mint from the garden)

Bourgogne, La Tufera, Etienne Sauzet 2005.

A bright viscous pale gold, nose a bit muted at first, but then revealed buttered biscuits, wonderful fat palate, layers of simple fruit and healthy wadge of balancing acidity. Long. My wife said she could drink a lot of that!!

First out of the case, try again 6-12 months?

last week I had my dose of basic Bourgogne at several restaurants in Paris:

- Anne Gros Bourgogne Blanc 2005: served in a small glass (at a 400% markup and still...), it was a fairly good wine with sense of place. B in Dale's scale.

- Ghislaine Barthod Bourgogne Rouge 2005: wow, lots of finesse, great nose with good intensity and elegant bouquet redolent of Chambolle, very good volume in the mouth. Outstanding. A-

- Domaine Roulot Bourgogne Blanc 2005: very tight (and served too cold), but with a great potential (and this is the basic wine). Outstanding. B+ but could be A with some time.

Also, had a Domaine Joblot Givry Blanc 2005 Clos de la Servoisine Premier Cru that was amazing, but then it was served in a good glass at perfect temperature. A-/A.

Is the la Tufera a new wine, separate from regular Bourgogne? Not seen that designation. I generally like the basic Sauzet Bourgogne. I used to think it a wine that could age surprisingly well, but as Sauzet seems especially subject to the PremOx curse won't try till cure is certain. Have one more '02 Bourgogne, and 1 '02 village Puligny.

thanks for notes. G. Barthod is very good producer. Roulot is a fave in Bourgogne blanc, I was a tad disappointed with '04, glad it sounds like back on track.

I had the chance to visit Etienne Sauzet one month ago and they told me that they were very concerned with this PremOx issue. It seems they no longer use silicone-coated corks, and have returned to traditional corks. They also have changed the bottles for a new model with a longer and tighter neck. From their comments, it seems that they have decided that corks were deemed culprit of the PremOx illness. Their 2006's are lovely from the bottle.
