[Slightly OT] UK restaurants

We're heading over to England in Jan. I'd hoped to fit in a meal at the Fat Duck, but it looks as though the one evening available is a Mon - and they're closed :(((.

So thinking about Le Manoir; but does anyone have recent experiences there or at the 'competition' (Waterside, etc. - although Waterside is also closed) by which I might be guided?

More on topic: the Crooked Billet

is a pub which has recently received rave reviews for the vast selection of wines by the glass (although it's frankly intimidating, and am I really going to pay >$300 for a *glass*, even if it is '96 DRC?), and apparently has decent food also. Fortunately, it's 10 mins from our base in England. Don't suppose anyone has either (i) been there, or even better (ii) cares to take a look at the list and offer suggestions as to what I should drink? :) [

Hi Ewan

You might like to try asking for advice on the UK WIne Forum

You'll have to register, but I suspect it will be worth your while, particularly on the wine-related aspects of restaurant choice.

Best wishes

If you're looking for London places, try subcribing to Harden's on line (free)

I've found it pretty reliable. I'm going to a couple of places in december, so may be able to give some suggestions.

Obviously much depends upon what you're looking for. French, modern Brit, Chinese, Singaporean, Thai etc.

come back and I'll see what I can suggest.

All the best Ian

Thanks, Ian.

We're very flexible with regard to cuisine, although probably not Indian - we get enough good Indian here in CT, surprisingly. French or (best) modern Brit would be top.

Given the exchange rate, and how it's hitting us on car hire and hotels, we may end up slightly lower pricewise anyway - the Crooked Billet (see other post) also has the advantage of being close to MK.

Ian,

For some reason I can't see your reply, only Ewan's response to it. OP is still up, as is Steve Slatcher's reply. Anyway, I'm responding to Ian. As I had asked for London wine bars, and restaurant recommendations in Oct, I followed this thread and went to the

site. Either there is a typo, or I can't seem to read. I got a furniture store site, and found nothing regarding restaurants. What am I missing? This sounds like a site I'd like to subscribe to, as we find ourselves in England at least twice a year.

Hope the trip to the "States" went well. All of the posts from the road seemed to indicate that it did.

Thanks, as always, Hunt

Googling 'harden UK restaurant' got me to

which I suspect is the intended site. Haven't perused yet, though.

I know, gauche to self-respond.

Brief perusal (via the

formatting link
link for all-UK content) was disappointing, as the search interface is minimal and the depth of reviews pretty low, it seems. The London database may well be better.

Sorry 'bout that.

Brilliant. When I'm back in the UK, I'll try to take time to post something a little more measured.

All the best

I've looked at the two places you mention. Both are quite close together, and neither are near central london at all. I've heard a lot about the Fat Duck, as being very adventurous and assured. The Crooked Billet in Henley doesn't look bad, though any place that A W-T likes makes me deeply suspicious.

I shall be going to La Trompette in Chiswick, certainly, (described as Gallic), and can report on it if you like. If you can get into Chez Bruce in Wandsworth, I loved the food there.

Hardens gives Clarkes, Notting Hill Brasserie Chez Bruce Glasshouse Redmonds

as restaurants having top notch Brit cuisine. Clarkes & NHB are both in the Kensington area, Chez Bruce is in a pretty out of the way location in wandsworth, the Glasshouse is in Kew, (tricky parking) and Redmonds in East Sheen. Of these I've only been to Bruce.

They also show 3 pubs & a Caff.

Anglesea Arms Earl Spencer Havelock Tavern Fuzzy's Grub

MK? Who he?

All the best Ian

Different Crooked Billet, Ian - I think you're assuming a London bias which isn't there :). We'll be based in Milton Keynes - the 'MK' below - and the Crooked Billet is a 'gastropub,' I suppose, on the southern edge of that city.

We *could* go into London, but it's a pain; doable if worthwhile, but our bias is toward north(west)ern home counties.

Thanks for the comments, though!
