Someone asked about St Emilion. For an incredible adventure there is a store near to the tourism office that has , IIIRC, every producer of St. Emilion represented, there are a lot of labels! the city istself is built into a bowl so there are some interesting angle looking out from the city.
The Cathedral was built underground and is now used twice a year for the wine growers (what is the word?) convention a big event with much pomp and ceremony
The Maison du Vin is indeed well worth a visit although it has only tiny proportion of the wines produced on the ”Hill of a Thousand Crus” they are all at prices which are the same as those at the vineyard itself. The Église Monolithe is also well worth a visit now after many years of restoration — it is, as J Coulter says, once again the site of the Jurade‘s intronisations on the third Sunday of June and September. . If you go the the offices of the Syndicat Viticole and the Jurade in the Rue Guadet you can get a booklet with all the chateaux who will welcome visitors - including phone numbers, times and languages spoken. Most growers will welcome the genuinely interested and those seeking knowledge, as is true in much of France. Real enthusiasm counts for much more than knowledge. Anyone interested in St.Emilion could do worse than seek out, via the web, their nearest Chancellery of the Jurade in the Uk, Belgium or the USA.
